Downtown Beirut, also known as the Beirut Central District, stands at the historic heart of Lebanon’s capital. Shaped by centuries of civilizations including the Phoenicians, Romans, Ottomans, and the French Mandate, the area reflects layers of architectural and cultural influence. After suffering extensive destruction during the Lebanese Civil War, Downtown was largely rebuilt and redeveloped in the 1990s under the direction of Solidere, a Lebanese real estate development company founded by former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Today, Downtown Beirut represents resilience and renewal. Iconic landmarks such as the Mohammad Al Amin Mosque and the Saint George Maronite Cathedral stand side by side, symbolizing coexistence and shared history. Archaeological ruins remain preserved within the modern cityscape, connecting ancient heritage with contemporary life.
